Wellness on a Shoestring (Part 1 of 4): How to Promote Activity During the Workday


We're kicking off our first blog series: Wellness on a Shoestring. In this series, we'll provide low cost ways for you to improve your team's corporate wellness and health!

1. Promote Walking Meetings

Walking meetings provide a a great way to simultaneously incorporate activity into your team's day and boost productivity and creativity! Walking meetings are a great low cost way to improve employee wellness. Your team will be in good company— influential leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg and President Barack Obama frequently engage in walking meetings. A  University of Michigan study found that those who spent time outside were better able to solve creative problems. Recently, a group of Stanford University researchers conducted a study on creativity. They split a group into two, outdoors and indoors, and gave them problems to solve. They discovered that the outdoors group responded more accurately and were more creative in their approach to solving the problems. They also found that creativity increased by 60% when the outdoors group was walking. More interestingly, researchers discovered that it was the act of walking, not the location, that improved creativity. This means that indoor walking meetings are game too! 

2. Walk to your Coffee (or Copies)  

Tasks such as going for a coffee break, talking with a colleague, or making copies can be adapted to improve your employees' physical health. One simple solution: employers can move often used appliances to a farther location. Relocating coffee and copying machines will force employees to get up and move throughout the day. Also, encourage your team members to walk to each other’s workspace and speak with them in person rather than having discussions over the phone. They’ll get more physical activity and have the added bonus of better teamwork because of face-to-face interactions. 

3. Create Office Intramural Sports

High School and College students aren’t the only ones who should enjoy the fun of being on a sports team. Adult sports teams are growing in popularity, and your team can start one too! There are many benefits to having office sports teams. Not only will your team improve their health and fitness, but competition will help foster trust with the people with whom they spend 40 or more hours a week. 4. Free Gym on Wheels: Park a Bike 

Bike riders know how precious their bikes are—and how hard it is to find spots for them. Your firm can encourage more employees to bike to work by providing secure bike racks in your office or parking lot.  Not only will you be positively impacting your employees’ health, but you’ll also be environmentally friendly! Jump on the bandwagon and join hundreds of other major companies in the American League of Bicyclists “Bicycle Friendly Business Program.” Also, cities like New York require commercial office buildings by law to offer bicycle storage, so make sure your employees are aware of the options available to them.
